Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam hoists SDG flag

On 25 September dozens of Dutch organizations, including all universities, will participate in a flag campaign together with Dutch representations abroad to express their support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. In total no fewer than 850 SDG flags will be hoisted.

Good results have already been achieved in the past five years – for example, VU Amsterdam is the most sustainable university in the Netherlands – but at the same time we know that a lot still needs to be done in the next ten years. The Netherlands scores well on goals such as ‘innovation’ and ‘combating inequality’, while we are still lagging behind on other SDGs. In short, we all have to shift up a gear. That is why we are launching the flag campaign: ‘Together for the SDGs’.

By hoisting the SDG flag, VU Amsterdam, organizations, municipalities, companies, civil society organizations, schools and the government show that they are part of this global movement around the SDGs. From Dutch universities of applied sciences to our embassies abroad, the flag will be on display on 25 September. In this way we show each other and the world that we consider climate action, gender equality, biodiversity and fair work to be of paramount importance.

The Sustainable Development Goals are the most widely supported instrument for dealing with the complex global challenges of the coming years: from poverty and gender inequality here in the Netherlands to the global climate and biodiversity crisis. The goals embrace all relevant themes and are all interconnected. They provide a compass for everyone to make a difference themselves.

When world leaders (virtually) discuss the SDGs during the General Assembly of the United Nations on 25 September and the SDG Action Day takes place in the Netherlands, it is essential to show that the goals are broadly supported here. Because the SDGs are there by and for everyone.
